Tanizaki's tragicomic tale of the physically-ailing seventy-seven-year-old Utsugi's erotic desire for life as personified by his flashy daughter-in-law is a late work of this twentieth-century master. When he died in in 1965, at the age of 79, after a long and prolific career, Tanizaki was among the most respected of the elder Japanese writers. He had achieved success and recognition much earlier: an edition of his complete works was issued in 1930; and he was awarded Japan's Imperial Prize for Literature in 1949.
